Spa Repair - Part 3 - Yuck - The Water in My Spa is Green!

!±8± Spa Repair - Part 3 - Yuck - The Water in My Spa is Green!

Most of us have a some point walked out to our spa, ready to use it, only to discover that the spa water is...green...

Our gut reaction is to call our spa service company and let them know how incompetent they are and that it's their fault...

But, most of the time that assumption is incorrect.

What is more likely to be going on is one of the following scenarios:

1. Your spa filters are dirty. When was the last time you took time to properly clean your filters? What happens it that a dirty filter impedes the water circulation. Poor water circulation affects how clean a spa is. Remedy: Every month you should remove your spa filters, clean them out with a garden hose, or, if they are in a really bad shape, clean them with a Spa Filter Cleaning Solution. This will in most situations clear up the spa water. If the filter are more than 6 months old, it is time to replace them

2. Your water chemistry is off! There are basically two things you have to be aware of in spa chemistry (I know there are more but if you get these two right, the rest follows easily). The first one is the pH of the water. The second one is the level of Chlorine (or whatever other sanitizer you are using) in the water. In the simplest version, the pH is for the spa and the spa equipment and the Chlorine if for you. The Chlorine keeps the water sanitized and healthy. The correct pH ensures that the water has the optimal balance between acidity and alkalinity. If your level of Chlorine is too low for a length of time, the water will turn green (=algae). So, if your spa water is green, check the chemical levels and ensure that they are correct.

3. Your circulation pump is not working. No circulation = green water (eventually). There are several reasons why your circulation pump is not working. A- Its broken. You need to call a spa service technician to diagnose it. B- The power to the spa has been turned off or has tripped off for some reason. When it comes to troubleshoot an electrical problem, it is most of the time better to call you spa repair company and allow a skilled technician to trouble shoot it. The risk of a home owner getting hurt when troubleshooting an electrical problem is great.

If the problem with your water persists, call your spa repair company. Pay them for a service call, typically between and 5 to diagnose the problem and follow their suggestion.

This is Part 3 in a 10 part series of Spa Repair and what you as a home owner easily can do yourself.
